Revolving Vase with Swimming Fish Decoration Qianlong reign (1736-1795) Porcelain, gold tracery on blue glaze Height: 23.5 cm, diameter: 5.4 cm, diameter of base: 8.4 cm
This piece consists of two concentric vases the innermost of which can be gently rotated by hand such that the fish and pond vegetation depicted thereon can be seen moving through the open windows on the sides of the outer vase. This ingenious design is known as a "rotating core vase"" (chuan-hsin p'ing). The manufacture of these vases requires considerable skill; the example shown here was shaped and fired in four separate sections: the neck body of the inner vase shoulder of the outer vase and body of the outer vase. After their initial firing a second application of glaze was used to fuse the outer sections around the inner vase.
